Terracotta Recommends 28th August 2023

Each week, your favourite Asian blu ray store will be recommending films that you should be watching. As we grow and add more and more films, we realise that we could be losing the curatorial approach that we started the site with, so to keep this going, we'd like to highlight some films that should be top of your browse (and hopefully watch) list.

This week's recommends are a range of kung fu action films on blu ray from boutique label Eureka Entertainment.

TWO FILMS BY JOHN WOO

Before the Hong Kong and Hollywood bullet ballet blockbusters he became known for, John Woo (A BETTER TOMORROW, FACE OFF) also made period costume epic wuxia films, and two such films are available in a beautiful collector edition release LAST HURRAH FOR CHIVALRY and HAND OF DEATH.

ZU WARRIORS FROM THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN (1983) dir. Tsui Hark.

ZU WARRIORS is a great example of early special effects in the Hong Kong film industry in the 80's and John Carpenter even credited the effects in this film for inspiring him to make BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.

THE FATE OF LEE KHAN (1973) dir. King Hu

We've picked THE FATE OF LEE KHAN to highlight the lesser known (and seen) of the three films in a trilogy: COME DRINK WITH ME, DRAGON INN and THE FATE OF LEE KHAN are three films in King Hu's 'Inn Trilogy' which highlights the importance of the setting of an inn as the centre of comings and goings throughout Chinese history.

SKINNY TIGER FATTY DRAGON (1990) dir. Lau Kar Wing & THE LUCKY STARS 3-FILM COLLECTION

For more modern kung fu action with a light comedic element, we recommend SKINNY TIGER FATTY DRAGON starring the comedic duo of Sammo Hung and Karl Maka and 3-film collection of "lucky dragon" films (Sammo, Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao together): Winners and Sinners, My Lucky Stars and Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars.

Enjoy!
