WOW Film Festival

With the festival just around the corner - excitement is building!

The WOW team are thrilled to have gathered such an incredible host of inspirational women from across the globe.
Nearly half the films in the 2021 programme are directed by women. These include directors Suzanne Crocker, Mattie Do, Arami Ullon and Shahad Ameen, as well as animator Chie Arai and producer Elaheh Nobakht.

Highlights for this years festival will include; Arisa Wakami's stunning animation created using sand features in The Kotatsu Shorts - a selection from up-and-coming female animators working in Japan - curated by Eiko Meredith.

Shahad Ameen's poetic mermaid tale Scales is rooted in Saudi Arabian folklore, where she explores themes of gender, beliefs and patriarchy.

The Long Walk
is the third feature from Laos' ground-breaking first female film director, Mattie Do, a meditative account of life and death as told through a melancholy sci-fi ghost story.

Manele Labibi breaks taboos in her charming debut Arab Blues, starring the currently exiled Iranian actor Golshifteh Farahani. Her magnetic characterisation breaks away from expectation of women in the Arab world.
