The first independent film in history to win the Best Picture award at the Japanese Academy Awards!

At the end of the Edo period in Kyoto, during a stormy night a samurai prepares to fight against an opposing clan member, when a flash of lightning hits and he wakes up to find himself in a different time.

He has been transported through time to the present day and the location where he was about to duel is now a film set for jidaigeki TV shows and movies. Still in his samurai clothes he is mistaken for an extra and immediately thrust into the world of jidaigeki productions. Due to his very ‘authentic’ look and speech, he starts working on many productions and finds himself playing the role of a “kirareyaku”, a swordsman whose job is to die spectacularly on film.

More Info

During a stormy night at the end of the Edo period, samurai Kosaka Shinzaemon prepares to fight a deadly duel. In a sudden flash of lightning, he is struck and transported through time to present-day Japan—landing not in battle, but in the middle of a jidaigeki film set.

Still in his samurai garb and speaking in an archaic dialect, Kosaka is mistaken for an extra and thrust into the surreal world of TV and film production. He soon finds work as a kirareyaku—a performer whose role is to die dramatically on screen—and starts building a life in this strange new world. But while he navigates his role in modern media, echoes from his past still loom.

This heartfelt and comedic time-slip drama is a tribute to Japan’s rich cinematic history, made even more touching as it honours legendary kirareyaku Seizo Fukumoto. A Samurai in Time is a breakout indie phenomenon, shot by director Junichi Yasuda with a small team and a passion for storytelling. From humble beginnings, it became a major box office success in Japan and earned a Best Picture win at the Japanese Academy Awards.
