From the late Toshiharu Ikeda, director of Evil Dead Trap (1988) comes a tale of powerful vengeance.
When a fisherman is killed by greedy land developers for standing in the way of their expansion plans, his pearl-diver wife Migiwa moves into unforgiving and vindictive payback on those yakuza responsible.

Mermaid Legend begins as a tragic, atmospheric drama and morphs into a blood-drenched tale of retribution. Migiwa Saeki is a pearl diver living a quiet life with her husband, Keisuke, a fisherman in a small coastal village in Japan. One evening, Keisuke witnesses a violent crime at sea — a secret he never gets the chance to tell. Not long after, he's brutally murdered by a gang of yakuza working on behalf of corrupt land developers. His death is quickly covered up, and Migiwa becomes the prime suspect, left for dead at the crime scene.

But Migiwa survives.

Forced into hiding, she retreats to the desolate island of Watakano, haunted by grief and betrayal. There, she begins to uncover the extent of the conspiracy and learns of the twisted web of lies spun by the developers who want to seize the coastal land for their own gain.

Fuelled by fury and sorrow, Migiwa wages a brutal campaign of vengeance — one that cuts through the heart of a rotten system. As her path collides with the son of one of the developers, loyalties are tested, and secrets are dragged to the surface.

Mermaid Legend begins as a tragic, atmospheric drama and morphs into a blood-drenched tale of retribution. Originally released in 1984 as the first feature from the revolutionary Directors Company, the film stands out as a powerful critique of greed, corruption, and female disempowerment — with a protagonist who refuses to stay silent.
