Hero (2002): A Visual and Narrative Triumph

Zhang Yimou’s HERO (2002) is a truly breath-taking martial arts epic that transcends the genre, blending stunning visuals, masterful choreography, and profound storytelling.

If you've not seen this yet, and you are a fan of director Zhang Yimou's other artistically choreographed historical action epics (HOUSE OF THE FLYING DAGGERS, CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER) then this should be firmly on your watchlist.

Set in ancient China, the film follows an enigmatic warrior, Nameless, who recounts his encounters with three legendary assassins while navigating themes of honour, sacrifice, and unity.

Each of these three encounters form three segments of the film, each it's own unique visual symphony, with bold colour palettes and meticulously choreographed action sequences that are both poetic and thrilling.

Featuring powerhouse performances from Jet Li (BODYGUARD FROM BEIJING), Tony Leung (INFERNAL AFFAIRS), Zhang Ziyi (THE BANQUET) and Maggie Cheung (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE), HERO is not just a film—it's an unforgettable cinematic experience.

You can buy the Directors Cut edition of HERO (2002) on blu ray, with a beautifully designed slipcase, on the Terracotta Distribtion.
