New Releases for September
September is yet another month of amazing releases. You got classics from Hong-Kong. Jackie Chan playing twins. A special run of underground Japanese cinema, which have been hard to find and a female led role in She Shoots Straight.
HARD BOILED 2: THE LAST BLOOD
Despite not really being a sequel to the Hong Kong action classic HARD BOILED (and not even starring Chow Yun Fat) this is still a great Hong Kong 1990's action film starring Alan Tam and Andy Lau.
A police vs terrorists story that spans Tibet, Hong Kong and Singapore, The original title being THE LAST BLOOD which was renamed to HARD BOILED 2: THE LAST BLOOD when it was first distributed in the UK.
THE GUARD FROM UNDERGROUND
Before becoming one of Japan’s most well-known horror directors through films like Cure, Pulse and Creepy, Kiyoshi Kurosawa started off his career in horror with 1992’s The Guard from Underground, the final film of the ‘Directors Company’.
Kiyoshi Kurosawa here fashions a dark tale that is both a sharp satire of corporate life and a B-movie thriller. A former sumo wrestler now working as a security guard goes on a murderous rampage in the company that’s employed him.
TWIN DRAGONS
Jackie Chan plays two roles as twin brothers separated at birth in Twin Dragons.
Ringo Lam and Tsui Hark team up to direct this Hong Kong action comedy where one twin has become a famous musician brought up in New York, and one is a street racer in Hong Kong.
THE LONG ARM OF THE LAW
Seeding the roots for CITY ON FIRE and Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS, Johnny Mak's film about a diamond store heist by a band of mainland Chinese robbers, on a score in Hong Kong, killing a policeman in the process, and laying low to avoid the heat.
SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT
SHE SHOOTS STRAIGHT (1990) is one of the best Hong Kong female-led action movies, a wild and furious showcase of female hellcats showing they can kick and punch harder and better than the boys!
Directed by Corey Yuen (YES, MADAM) and starring Joyce Godenzi (EASTERN CONDORS), Tony Leung Ka Fai, Carina Lau, Sammo Hung and Yuen Wah.
