CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000) is Ang Lee's breathtaking martial arts epic and one of the most celebrated foreign-language films ever made. Master swordsman Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) has resolved to leave the life of the warrior behind, entrusting his legendary Green Destiny sword to fellow fighter Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) for safe keeping. But the sword is stolen by a masked thief of astonishing skill, and the trail leads to the governor's headstrong daughter Jen (Zhang Ziyi), whose secret life conceals an extraordinary and dangerous past.
As the pursuit leads across a stunning landscape of rooftops and bamboo forests, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON weaves together breathtaking action choreography, lyrical romance and Ang Lee's signature visual elegance into a film that redefined world cinema and launched a generation of international audiences into the world of wuxia. Adapted from Wang Dulu's novel, with action choreography by Yuen Wo-ping, cinematography by Peter Pau and a score by Tan Dun, the film was nominated for ten Academy Awards and won four: Best Foreign Language Film, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Original Score. It was also the first foreign-language film to take more than US$100 million at the American box office.
