HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS (2004) is one of the most visually stunning films ever made, a landmark of wuxia cinema from acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou. Set in AD 859 as the Tang dynasty declines, the film follows two government captains, Jin (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and Liu (Andy Lau), who are tasked with infiltrating a secretive rebel organisation known as the House of Flying Daggers. Their mission centres on Mei (Zhang Ziyi), a blind dancer and suspected rebel operative, in one of her most celebrated performances. What begins as a political thriller evolves into an operatic tale of deception and impossible love, shot in ravishing colour by cinematographer Zhao Xiaoding, whose work earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography. The film was also nominated for the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.
