More Info
Yamamoto is a high-ranking yakuza in Tokyo whose loyalty and code of honour are tested when a violent gang war ends with his boss’s assassination. Hunted and out of options, he fakes his own death and escapes to Los Angeles to start anew.
Reuniting with his half-brother Ken and meeting Ken’s friends – small-time drug dealers navigating the streets of LA – Yamamoto becomes “Aniki”, the older brother figure. With a cold, calculating intensity and ruthless violence, he expands their street-level operation into a dominant criminal empire that soon draws the ire of both local gangs and the Italian Mafia.
Brother is a stark and stylish crime drama that blends the existential quiet of Japanese cinema with the brutal intensity of American gangster films. It’s Takeshi Kitano’s English-language debut – raw, minimalist, and unmistakably his own.
This limited edition BFI Blu-ray restored film in high definition and includes rare behind-the-scenes features, making it essential for Kitano fans and collectors of Asian cinema.

What makes this release special compared to others? This is the first official UK Blu-ray release of Brother (2000) and comes with a wealth of rare and exclusive extras, offering a deeper look into the making of the film and Kitano's broader filmography.
I love Takeshi Kitano’s movies & his first & only US film ‘Brother’ was deemed a poorer effort on release but I still loved it as it views like a Japanese film with hints of his earlier movie ‘Sonatine’ which I loved. I won’t review the actual movie as apart from a fantastic movie which surprises & entertains.
The Blu-Ray transfer is excellent & definitely an improvement over the DVD release which originally came out & the audio choices are also great. I also really enjoyed the extras included. Another quality release from BFI, my only gripe is that I wish they had done a 4K Blu-Ray edition but still a great addition for any Kitano fan.
