RED SORGHUM is the astonishing debut feature of Zhang Yimou - the film that announced a great director to the world and launched one of cinema's most iconic on-screen partnerships. Set in the remote Shandong highlands of 1930s China, it follows a young woman (Gong Li) who is married off to a leprous winery owner, then widowed, and who must run the winery alone while contending with her fiercely passionate lover (Jiang Wen) and the encroaching brutality of the Japanese invasion.
Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 1988, RED SORGHUM is a film of epic visual sweep, earthy sensuality and enormous historical anger. It was the first Chinese film to win a major international prize. Both Zhang Yimou and Gong Li were entirely unknown at the time of filming; this was the beginning of everything.
