SHAOLIN SOCCER (2001) is a Hong Kong sports comedy film that seamlessly blends martial arts and soccer, directed by and starring Stephen Chow.
The film follows Sing, a former Shaolin monk, who dreams of promoting the benefits of Kung Fu. Whilst demonstrating his kung fu kick, he is inadvertently scouted for a football team. With the help of a down-and-out former soccer star, Golden Leg, and his five former kung fu brothers, they embark on a quest to win a prestigious football tournament, facing off against Golden Leg's old nemesis, giving the chance for the former shaolin monks to reclaim their dignity.
The film is celebrated for its unique combination of high-energy martial arts choreography and over-the-top 'mo lei tau' style of comedy. "Shaolin Soccer" became a massive box office success, garnering international acclaim and a cult following.
Critics praised the film's originality, humour, and the charismatic performance of Stephen Chow. "Shaolin Soccer" is not just a film about sports; it's a heart-warming story of redemption, teamwork, and the power of believing in one's dreams.
Released in Hong Kong on 12 July 2001, SHAOLIN SOCCER was the highest-grossing film in Hong Kong at the time, and at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards it won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Stephen Chow, as well as Best Supporting Actor. Chow stars as Sing opposite Vicky Zhao Wei as Mui, with Ng Man-tat as Golden Leg and Patrick Tse as Hung.
