Kon Ichikawa's scathing portrait of post-war Japanese youth, PUNISHMENT ROOM (1956) follows Takashi, an aimless and disaffected university student who drifts into a world of petty crime, casual violence and moral ambiguity. Based on Shintaro Ishihara's scandalous novel, the film captures a generation unmoored from tradition, seeking thrills to fill an existential void. Ichikawa's razor-sharp direction and Kazuo Miyagawa's sumptuous cinematography give the film a cool, detached elegance that makes its darkness all the more disturbing. PUNISHMENT ROOM stands as one of the essential works of Japanese cinema's golden age and a precursor to the taiyozoku genre.
