Excellent balance between drama and endearing fun. All actors deliver a great performance, lifting the film to it's worth.
A Samurai in Time is a very well constructed and very enjoyable movie, deserving all the accolades, praise and of course success!
From a screening at one cinema to eventually screening at around 300 cinemas across Japan, due mainly because word of mouth!
A great movie and worth adding to your collection!
Easily the best Godzilla film since Shin Godzilla and further proof that America should leave the franchise well alone. Properly written and well formed characters add gravitas to the scenes of large scale destruction when Gojira does appear and there’s just enough nostalgic nods to the original without it becoming too meta or a festival of ‘ooh, look what I spotted’ Easter eggs. Kaiju films don’t get much better than this, highly recommended.
Considered the first modern wuxia, the 1966 'Come Drink With Me' is a must see martial arts flick. Although the plot revolves around swordswoman Golden Swallow (Cheng Pei Pei) on a mission to rescue her brother, its not the story that makes this film most noteworthy. Its that it was a Hong Kong film that combined for the first time Western editing techniques with Japanese samurai style along with beautiful cinematography all within a Chinese aesthetic. Director King Hu would later make 'Dragon Inn' and his most celebrated film 'A Touch of Zen'. By todays standards the movie's action might seem slow and stylized with overly dramatic moments, but in 1966 it blazed a new path for the Hong Kong film industry going forward.
The legendary Cheng Pei Pei's beauty and charm along with her dance background made her a perfect lead for martial arts movies. International audiences best know her as the treacherous Jade Fox in the 2000 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' but the Hong Kong superstar already had a 30+ year career up to that point. When I think about her illustrious career there are many films of hers that I love, but I always come back to my favorite and the one that put her and director King Hu on the map, the immortal Come Drink With Me.
I love Takeshi Kitano’s movies & his first & only US film ‘Brother’ was deemed a poorer effort on release but I still loved it as it views like a Japanese film with hints of his earlier movie ‘Sonatine’ which I loved. I won’t review the actual movie as apart from a fantastic movie which surprises & entertains.
The Blu-Ray transfer is excellent & definitely an improvement over the DVD release which originally came out & the audio choices are also great. I also really enjoyed the extras included. Another quality release from BFI, my only gripe is that I wish they had done a 4K Blu-Ray edition but still a great addition for any Kitano fan.
I’m still shaking my head at the weapons used in these films especially the Galing gun featured in the second film. Enjoyablwcyes, but i have forgotten most of what i saw, Reason enough to relax and watch all three at a more leisurely pace.
Put this on in the background if you are hosting a cocktail party, your guests will think that you are fun and sophisticated.
Immersive and entertaining with its characters and story i highly recommend this to anyone.
Very fast service always happy with items to get You know when you walk in and you open up
It presents itself as a sexploitation but it is much more an arthouse movie with sometimes long monologues and stylized camera work. Since I enjoy both type of movie I enjoyed this one, and would recommend it.
A hit man himself becomes the target after not following his boss’ orders, having developed an affection for his boss’ girlfriend who he is supposed to eliminate after she has an affair. An excellent film with great cinematography, acting and a superb sense for creating mood both through visuals and sound. While ultra violent at times it has a solid story for a noir. It does not show its age at all, you could think it was done in the last 5 years or so. Very much recommended (but keep in mind the violence - it does deserve the 18 rating and isn’t one for kids). The 4K BluRay is amazing and has various extras.
two great films that inspired a generation of film makers, looking and sounding great highly recommended.
*forget about the censorship comment, that is how the movie was made and it doesn't take away from the movie at all. I loved this movie!
Excellent movie, I have given the movie 5 stars but I was very disappointed to see the censorship with blurred nudity. I live in the UK and bought the UK version, I wonder if the US version is uncensored!? If so I need to send this back and buy the US version.
This movie was great! I really enjoyed it. The underwater cinema photography was beautiful.
