Tomu Uchida’s “The Mad Fox” (Koiya koi nasuna koi) is an extraordinary Japanese film from 1962 that blends elements of Jidaigeki drama, folklore, and theater into a unique cinematic experience. The film is based on a Bunraku puppet play by Takeda Izumo from 1734 and presents a visually stunning journey through love, madness, and mythology.
Plot
The story is set during the Heian period and follows Yasuna, a young soothsayer whose life falls apart after the murder of his beloved Sakaki. In his madness, he encounters Sakaki’s twin sister Kuzunoha, whom he mistakes for his deceased lover. However, Kuzunoha belongs to a family of Kitsune (fox spirits) who can transform into humans. The narrative intertwines political intrigue, romantic confusion, and supernatural elements as Yasuna drifts between reality and illusion.
Aesthetics and Style
Uchida combines traditional theatrical forms such as Kabuki and Bunraku with cinematic techniques, creating a dreamlike and expressionistic atmosphere. The color palette, particularly the dominant yellow tones, along with the stylized sets, creates a surreal world that reflects Yasuna’s descent into madness. I've been waiting for a Blu-Ray release of Stray Dog for years and the release from BFI and Terracotta is incredible! So many great additional features and the transfer itself is beautiful

I originally saw this film some years ago via a fan subbed SD copy floating around the internet and feel in love with it from the first viewing. I never expected in a million to see it get a legitimate release in the U.K., let alone in such a wonderful edition. Huge kudos to Third Window and Terracotta for making this available to the English speaking world… more please.

I can’t thank Third Window enough for finally giving us legitimate, HD, subtitled releases of these, previously obscure, films from Toshiharu Ikeda. Scent of a Spell is a film I never expected to get a release in the U.K. and on the same day as Mermaid Legend, we really live in wonderful world.

Great movie, transfer is great, audio is really good and arrived fast and undamaged

Fantastic movie, and it's awesome that it comes with things like bts and interviews. That's the sort of thing I truly appreciate when it comes to indie films like this!

Cure starts out as a crime thriller with a mysterious twist that evolves into something else... Sometimes the long play really works, the time taken in this movie adds so much to the final product. That atmosphere that slowly creeps in, the sinister tones that rear their head as revelations unfold all work with an expert finesse that bring you to a conclusion you may have expected but weren't ready for.

Cure was even better the second time. In fact, it actually made it creepier knowing where it was leading and having a better grasp on the themes. Picked up the Eureka 4K, which looks incredible and has some great bonus features.
